How to use a chisel ?

Using a chisel involves choosing the right type of chisel for the job required. Other factors need to be considered such as the size of the chisel and the shape of the blade.

Before starting work, the chisel should be thoroughly inspected to ensure that it is in good condition. A straight edge can be used to check the flatness of the blade. Sharpen the blade if necessary to ensure that the chisel is protected throughout the process.

Once the tools are ready, a straightedge and carpenter's square can be used to measure the surface and the depth of removal required. The wood should then be secured to ensure that it remains stable during the chiseling process.

The chisel should be placed at a 90-degree angle when making small depressions in the wood. The chisel can then be tapped with a mallet to carve out the desired amount of wood. The beveled edge should be closest to the wood when holding the chisel.

Next, chisel along the grain of the wood. Areas of scratches should be chiseled away until the wood is extracted within the contours at the desired level. Care should be taken to tap away from the body and to extract only a small amount of wood at a time.

The thinning chisel is suitable for woodworking tasks that require a high degree of complexity and precision. The cutting process involves gradual smoothing and removal of surface layers. The chisel blade should be held in one hand and the handle in the other, and the wood should be held securely on a workbench or clamp. The non-dominant hand is usually used to hold and guide the chisel. The bottom of the chisel should be kept in contact with the wood throughout the process. The cut should be repeated at a gradual rate until the desired amount of wood is extracted.

Masonry chisels are suitable for carving, trimming or shaping materials like brick and stone. Before starting work, it is recommended that a pencil or paving chalk be used to mark the material to be chiseled. The scribe line can then be inserted in preparation for chiseling. The masonry chisel should be 90 degrees perpendicular to the horizontal in order to accurately enter the brick or stone. The center of the scored line can then be firmly tapped with a mallet, repeating the process until it breaks evenly.

Regardless of the particular type of chisel, it is always recommended to carry a sharpening stone with you so that you can sharpen the chisel whenever needed. Additionally, a sharpener can be used to sharpen and fine-tune the edge. Once these steps have been completed, you can begin sharpening and polishing the chisel blades.
